The 4th Annual BIG GIVE ran from October 1-31, 2011, benefiting Food Bank of the Rockies. The event not only helped increase public awareness about the growing problem of hunger in our community, but brought in more than 20,561lb of food in monetary and in-kind donations.

What started as a simple plan to collect food for families most in need turned into so much more for the BIG GIVE 2011. Not only did the program have more than 25 organizations agree to participate at its inception, but it also had 12 businesses and schools sign up to help once the BIG GIVE got underway. In the first week, the Superior COSTCO employees had already filled one barrel. And Sky Vista Middle School brought in 726 lb of food during its one-week drive!

When asked why he was participating with this food drive, Randall Paul, manager of A-Affordable Transmission Centers, which provided four GIVE locations, stated, “It breaks my heart to think of children being hungry.” In addition to great corporate support, even the youngest individual kindness givers were able to help.  Armed with a smaller version of the BIG GIVE blue barrel, kids set out around their neighborhoods asking for donations. “We need to help other kids who are hungry,” said Michael, age 9.

Blanketing the Denver Metro area from Lyons to Parker with blue barrels, the success of the BIG GIVE is a direct result of all of the organizations that agreed to participate and promote such a great cause, including:
