Oh what a day! R2K’s Kindness Day 2015 was another wonderful day of laughter, friendship, music, and of course, kindness!

This year, we held a getting-to-know-you Ice Cream Social at Westminster Commons, an apartment complex for seniors operated by Volunteers of America. It was held on Friday April 24th in celebration of both kindness, as well as R2K Founder, Elva Pellouchoud’s birthday! The day came complete with ice cream and all the fixings, a female barbershop quartet, and a raffle with lots of fun prizes.

The lunchroom was transformed by Design Works using pretty pastel linens and balloons, as well as floral arrangements made to look like ice cream sundaes! Seriously, they looked good enough to eat. The actual ice cream was served up with style from the Cold Stone Creamery, whose experts would toss a scoop behind their back with one hand, and into a waiting cup in the other! We also had delicious cake pops by POPsux. Their double scoop sundae cake pops (complete with the tiniest cherry you ever did see planted on top) were just darling, and the first to be gobbled up.

Sneak Preview, a talented and fun loving female barbershop quartet, roamed the room singing songs table by table so that other guests could continue to socialize. But the room found it hard to tune out their amazing sound as they sang songs of the 40s and 50s. They’ve definitely perfected their art over the 20 years that they’ve been singing together, and the residents were thrilled to see their fellow peers (one of the members of Sneak Preview is in her 80s!) still winning over their audience with perfectly harmonized voices.

As the event warmed up, guests got their photos taken complete with funny props, including mustaches, pucker faces, crazy hats and silly glasses. Dimitrie of Step Up Photo had his camera at the ready to capture all the shenanigans.

Excitement and anticipation hung in the air as numbers were called out for raffle prizes. As winning ticket holders raised their hands to claim their prize, neighbors and friends cheered in congratulations.

Resort 2 Kindness loves to put on these events and bring smiles to the faces of those who may not otherwise be able to create these experiences for themselves. However, the smiles in our hearts were definitely greater than those we sought to create, as upon leaving, we were treated to so many genuine thanks, and hugs, twinkling eyes and happy grins.

Thank you, Westminster Commons, for letting us into your home and making us feel so appreciated and welcome. Special thanks also to the wonderful staff, led by Shannon and Dee of Volunteers of America, who were so accommodating. Resort 2 Kindness hopes we achieved our aim of helping the residents find a new face to call ‘friend’. We know we did.
